Huff has been using animal imagery as an expressive component in her paintings and sculpture since 1983. She cites the animal motion studies of Eadweard Muybridge as being influential in the development of her paintings during the 1980's. With the experience of teaching children for the past 7 years, it was a natural progression from her earlier a work to that of the neo-expressionistic spirit of her current animal works of today.
Along with the participation in the biannual Open Studios at Hunter's Point in May and October, Huff has been teaching children in the Carver Mural Program in Bayview Hunter's Point neighborhood since 1993. The creation of murals for private commissions and public art projects continue to occupy her career as an artist.
"I was initially inspired to paint dog imagery after a friend related stories to me about her dog, Buster. I had quite a bit of scrap lumber laying around the studio and wanted to do a cutout piece of Buster as a gift. After that, I found myself continually working with dog images and was eventually giving small plywood cutout s to each friend who had a dog. I became excited seeing the spirit of the dog emerge by use of movement and color integrated with the various quirks and gestures dogs exhibit in their personality. I prefer the dog images that stand alone without an environment. Cutting the image out of plywood shows the freedom of movement and gesture inherent in a dog without the limits of border."
